Mrs. Eyoawan Bassey Otu, today flagged-off the Children Carnival from the Botanic Garden.In her remarks, the Governor's Wife stated that Children are the future of any great nation and should be encouraged by teaching them norms and values of the society, to enable them add value to themselves as well as expose them to life's requirements.Speaking earlier, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, affirmed that the children's Carnival is an opportunity to preach humanity, show love, compassion, kindness and be more humane in every dealings. Dr Edu admonished all to raise a voice for humanity through the Carnival Calabar to put an end to violence, war, massacre and killings around the world and also preach peace.Also speaking, the Chairman , Cross River State Carnival Commission, Mr Gabe Onah, lauded the Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu for bringing back the Children's Carnival and ensuring a better tomorrow for them through this medium.Onah, described the Governor's Wife as 'the sweetness' for ensuring the Children's Carnival which is one of her passions.The Carnival troupe of seven bands which began with the Seagull band was a display of culture, folklore, education, child rights, sports, moral training, happy children and a secured future.By Carolyn Ugbor

In Cross River we are building a subnational which shall be self-sustaining. Teaching them the values of the society and enabling them to add value to themselves.”According to the Governor’s wife, it is imperative that in this season of sweetness, they are given a pride of place and celebrated for their uniqueness and “encouraging them with all they need shows that they are loved and valued. This junior Carnival shows that we are ready in whatever way to support them to achieve their dreams and grow up healthy in all aspect of life,” she added.Earlier in her remarks, the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu stated that the Carnival is an “opportunity to preach humanity as humans and being humane to others. It is an opportunity to show kindness to others because that is what Carnival represents,” adding that there is no religion or belief that is greater than humanity.Describing the festival as ‘Humanity Carnival,’ Dr. Edu called on the need to value life, using the Carnival Calabar to raise a voice against massacre, voice and war in the country and every part of the world, noting that peace and humanity is priceless.On his part, the Chairman, Cross River Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabe Onah who described the Governor’s Wife as the ‘mother of sweetness’ expressed excitement at the celebration of the Children’s Carnival. Governor’s Wife Leads Procession of Carnival Bands to Celebrate the 2023 Children’s Carnival

Cross River State Government said it has taken the first concrete step towards the industralisation and economy growth of the state. This is as it has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between it and Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL) for the setting of wind power generating plant, electric vehicle assembly plant and buses.This disclosure was made known by the State Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu in Calabar, the State capital city, when he addressed the media on the gains of the State government’s attendance at the COP28 event and its determination to pursue vigorously some of outcomes of the global climate event.To this end, Otu revealed that one of the gains, ‘‘is the signing of a MoU between the Cross River State Government and Oando Clean Energy Limited (OCEL). This MoU was signed towards the development of a 100MW Wind Power Generating Plant in Akamkpa Local Government Area which will significantly increase access to electric power in the State.‘‘It also include the establishment of an Electric Vehicle (EV) assembly plant in the State, as well as the rollout of electric buses for mass transportation within the State, which will considerably reduce carbon emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.‘‘As part of our green credentials, Cross River State is truly blessed with abundant wind speeds that are conducive to the establishment of wind farms and power plants. Therefore, the development of the 100 MW Wind Power Plant in Akamkpa will not only significantly increase access to electric power for both residential and commercial use in urban and rural areas but also contribute to environmental protection and climate change mitigation and bring about significant economic benefits to the State.’’He further noted, ‘‘Also, the establishment of the Electric Vehicle (EV) assembly plant in our dedicated green manufacturing zone within Cross River State's Free Trade Zone will create job opportunities, both directly in manufacturing and assembly and indirectly in associated industries.‘‘This will stimulate economic growth and enhance local skills and expertise development within the region. In addition to this, the rollout of electric vehicles for mass transportation, from highway to last mile, will significantly reduce carbon emissions.‘‘This aligns with global efforts to combat climate change. Through these two projects, the goals of developing sustainable communities within the State, stimulating economic growth from stronger investor interest, and increasing economic activity will be achieved, thereby increasing citizens' quality of life.The Governor said Cross River is poised as the new frontiers for transforming Nigeria into eco-economy, saying, ‘‘Transforming Cross River into Nigeria's Eco-Capital - Matching words with action Moving forward, Cross River State remains steadfast in its dedication to implementing the resolutions and commitments made at COP28.‘‘We are committed to translating these discussions, collaborations, and agreements into actionable steps that will positively impact our environment, economy, and the well-being of our citizens.’’

In the coming days, the State will be unveiling its various plans targeting an array of green economic sectors, including e-mobility, reforestation, power, and biodiversity. This is as the state has attracted the establishment of $500 million 1GW Solar PV Manufacturing Plant by a consortium of international investors.These developments were disclosed by the state Governor, Senator Bassey Edet Otu while briefing the media in Calabar, the State capital, on the outcomes of the state government participation at the recently concluded 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) between November 30 and December 12, 2023.According to him, one of the gains from the world climate conference, is that, ‘‘a greater opportunity for climate-resilient infrastructure development has been opened to Cross River State.’’To this end, Otu noted that, ‘‘Cross River State is absolutely committed to fostering an environment that nurtures innovation, encourages investment in green initiatives, and promotes a thriving green economy. This commitment was shown in efforts aimed at maximising the opportunities provided by the COP28 event and was evident in the initiatives, partnerships, and collaborations initiated by the State government build up to the conference, which culminated in various gains.’’Speaking further, the governor disclosed that one of the gains recorded by the state was the signing of an, ‘‘MoU for the establishment of a 1GW Solar PV Manufacturing Plant in Cross River State.’’This MoU, he said was signed between the Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria (INFRACORP), Solarge International BV, and The African Green Infrastructure Investment Bank (AFGIIB).‘‘The project will be financed through a $500M Foreign Direct Investment syndicated by the African Green Infrastructure Investment Bank. This project will significantly extend the reach of renewable energy in the State,’’ he disclosed.Further, ‘‘the proposed 1GW P.V. manufacturing plant will be located in the dedicated Green Manufacturing Hub in Cross River State's Free Trade Zone. The Government of Cross River State is committed to making the State a home for green manufacturing projects, and we will be working with the state assembly to pass eco-friendly laws and create an enabling environment for the creation of a green economy for the benefit of our people and supporting the overall economic growth of Nigeria.Otu added, ‘‘the establishment of this solar P.V. manufacturing plant is a significant step towards achieving our nation's ambitious renewable energy goals. It will reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and their associated emissions, create thousands of jobs, and boost our economy.
