The Cross River State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the healthcare system by prioritizing nursing education as a cornerstone strategy for achieving universal health coverage and sustaining human resources for health.

This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, while addressing participants at the National Association of Nigeria Student Nurses and Midwives (NANSNM), South-South Zone Quiz and Awards Ceremony held in Calabar.

Dr. Ayuk emphasized that nursing professionals constitute over 60% of the healthcare workforce in most medical facilities, making their training a vital investment for the state.

“This is why we have scaled up the number of Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Cross River State to four—all of which have received full accreditation—thanks to the support and visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Bassey Edet Otu,” he said.

He further urged nursing students to remain focused, committed, and disciplined, adding that academic excellence is critical to their future and the state’s healthcare agenda.

“Avoid distractions and embrace your education with seriousness. The government is doing its part; you must do yours to build a healthier Cross River,” the Commissioner advised.

Earlier, the Zonal President of NANSNM, Comrade Treasure Adaobi Anene, welcomed participants and reiterated the association’s mission to advocate for students’ rights and promote their welfare across the nation.

“This event is not just about winning; it is about encouraging healthy competition, academic excellence, and unity among student nurses in the South-South region,” she noted.

Comrade Anene also commended state governments within the South-South zone for their efforts in developing colleges of nursing and called on students to improve their performance in appreciation of the investments made.

In recognition of his outstanding service and leadership, Dr. Ayuk—who also chaired the occasion—was presented with an Excellence Award by the association.
