As Nigeria marks its 26th Democracy Day, the Honourable Commissioner for Health in Cross River State, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, has extended heartfelt congratulations to national and state leaders, while celebrating the deepening impact of democratic governance on the lives of ordinary citizens — especially in the health sector.
In a powerful goodwill message released from the Ministry of Health Headquarters in Calabar, Dr. Ayuk praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, for their “focused and courageous leadership in advancing Nigeria’s democratic journey and national rebirth.”
“This day is more than a commemoration of a pivotal moment in our national history,” the statement read. “It is a reaffirmation of the people’s power, the triumph of hope over despair, and a celebration of the democratic ideals that define our collective aspirations as Nigerians.”
The commissioner acknowledged significant progress made under the Tinubu administration in infrastructure development, economic reforms, security, and institutional strengthening, noting that these efforts reflect a democracy evolving into “a more purposeful, people-facing reality.”
At the subnational level, Dr. Ayuk spotlighted the transformational governance being witnessed in Cross River State under the stewardship of Governor Bassey Edet Otu, describing his “People-First” agenda as a beacon of participatory democracy and inclusive development.
“In the health sector, we are witnessing unprecedented reforms and revitalization — from the renovation and equipping of healthcare facilities, to the recruitment of medical personnel, investment in community-based care, maternal health, and the deepening of universal health coverage,” he stated. “These are not just programs — they are lifelines for our people, delivered with compassion and intent under Governor Otu’s visionary guidance.”
Dr. Ayuk also expressed admiration for Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Peter Odey and Speaker of the House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem for their unwavering commitment to democratic stability and collaboration, which he said have helped build “a progressive governance architecture, truly reflective of democratic dividends at work.”
Reflecting on the symbolic weight of June 12 — the day widely regarded as Nigeria’s truest celebration of the people’s will — the commissioner urged citizens to view democracy as a powerful tool for equity and justice, especially in delivering essential services such as healthcare.
“Democracy is how the voice of a rural mother in Obubra, the hopes of a child in Bakassi, and the needs of the elderly in Obanliku find expression in the policies we craft and the services we deliver,” he noted.
As the state and nation look to the future, Dr. Ayuk called for continued strength, wisdom, and grace for leaders at all levels. He concluded with a fervent hope for a more inclusive, healthy, and prosperous society: “May democracy thrive, may our people flourish, and may Cross River State remain a glowing symbol of people-centered progress.”
Happy Democracy Day, Nigeria.
